Job Opportunity - Senior Computational Biologist

Position Summary

The Computational Bioscience Research Center (CBRC) is seeking a highly motivated individual to join the core staff team.  The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting center activities relating to computational biology.

Major Responsibilities

  • Designing, implementing and managing bioinformatics solutions on center platforms, including on HPC/Cluster environment.
  • Testing of software developed and providing post release support, including training.
  • Writing technical and operational documentation.
  • Providing general bioinformatics support including support for commonly used bioinformatics tools and resources.
  • Collaborating with internal and external biologists and computational biologists to develop and apply appropriate bioinformatics analyses.
  • Contributing to generation of protocols, publications, and intellectual property.
  • Supporting center management in the writing of reports relating to center research activities and contributing to center proposal ideas and writing.

Competencies

  • Strong knowledge in genomics, comparative genomics, and metagenomics.
  • Demonstratable knowledge in next and third generation sequencing technologies.
  • Experience in Unix and programming languages (Python, R, Perl, or equivalent).
  • Web development skills are a plus (e.g. PHP, JavaScript).
  • Database management such as MySQL or PostgreSQL.
  • Experience or familiarity with system administration is desirable.
  • Proficiency in technical writing
  • Expert level knowledge of commonly used bioinformatics tools and resources (BLAST, Clustal family, MEGA phylogenetics tool, etc.)

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in computational biology, bioinformatics, computer science, or related field.
  • At least 4 years’ experience in a supporting bioinformatics role is required.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and time management skills.
  • Creative, organized, motivated and a team player.
