Salah Abdeljabar, a PhD student in the KAUST Communication Theory Lab & UNESCO Chair on Education to Connect the Unconnected has been awarded the competitive ICTP-Arab Fund PhD Fellowship. This fellowship, part of the UNESCO ICTP/IAEA Sandwich Training Educational Programme (STEP), supports students from Arab countries in the fields of physics, mathematics, and related fields.
The fellowship will enable Salah to conduct advanced research on "Delay Tolerant Networking (DTN) as a Cost-Effective Solution for Extending Internet Connectivity in Rural Areas." His research aims to explore innovative methods to bridge the digital divide, providing reliable Internet access to underserved communities.
As part of the fellowship, Salah will have the opportunity to visit ICTP’s research and training facilities in Trieste, Italy, for several times over the next three years, in order to collaborate with Dr. Marco Zennaro and his team on DTN research projects of joint interest. This fellowship underscores his commitment (and more generally the commitment of the KAUST UNESCO Chair on Education to Connect the Unconnected) in addressing global challenges and contributing to the socio-economic development of the rural areas within the Arab region.
