Abstract

Promoter is a genome region involved in the initiation and regulation of transcription. It contains the transcription start site (TSS), spans upstream and some downstream sequences relative to TSS. Accurate identification of promoters is fundamental for:

  • Detecting 5'-boundary (start) of genes
  • Understanding gene expression patterns

Main points of this talk are:

  • The latest news on the eukaryotic promoter architecture, as
    • Current Promoter classes
    • A single promoter vs alternative promoters
    • Unidirectional promoter vs bidirectional promoter
  • Experimental and computational identification of promoters: current progress and challenges
  • bTSSfinder:  a novel bacterial promoter search tool
  • TSSPlant: a novel plant promoter search tool
  • Experimental and computational identification of promoters: progress and limitations
