Muhammad Mustafa Hussain is a founding professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), KAUST and a Visiting Professor of EECS, University of California, Berkeley. He is Principal Investigator and Principal Innovator of Futuristic Electronics Lab, ideator of FabLabTM and Virtual FabTM (http://vFabLab.org), founding the logistic director of Imagine Lab @ KAUST, PI of KAUST-KFUPM Special Initiative and active member of the Sensor Initiative of the King Abdullah University of Sciences and Technology, Saudi Arabia. Hussain's research is in transformational electronics and includes innovating new applications for web integrated interactive electronics using CMOS compatible processes to transform materials, device architectures, substrates, waste materials into impactful resources including high-performance flexible-stretchable-transparent-reconfigurable inorganic nanoelectronics and nanoelectronic systems.

Education and early career

Dr. Muhammad Mustafa Hussain (Ph.D., ECE, UT Austin, Dec 2005) before joining KAUST was Program Manager of Emerging Technology Program in SEMATECH, Austin. His program was funded by DARPA NEMS, CERA, and STEEP programs.

Scientific American has listed his research as one of the Top 10 World Changing Ideas of 2014. Applied Physics Letters selected his paper as one of the Top Feature Articles of 2015. He and his students have received 39 research awards including IEEE Region 5 Outstanding Individual Achievement Award 2016, World Technology Award Finalist in Health and Medicine 2016, TEDx 2017, Outstanding Young Texas Exes Award 2015 (UT Austin Alumni Award), US National Academies’ Arab-American Frontiers of Sensors 2015, 2016, DOW Chemical Sustainability Challenge Award 2012, etc. His research has been highlighted extensively in international media like in Washington Post, Wall Street Journal (WSJ), IEEE Spectrum, etc.

Professional and editorial activities

A regular panelist of US NSF grants reviewing committees, Dr. Hussain is the Fellow of American Physical Society (APS), Institute of Physics, UK and Institute of Nanotechnology, UK, IEEE Electron Devices Society Distinguished Lecturer, Editor-in-Chief of Applied Nanoscience (Springer-Nature), Editor of IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices, and an IEEE Senior Member. He has served as the first or corresponding author in 90% of his 350+ research papers (including 30+ invited reviews, 35+ cover articles, and 175+ journal papers) and 50+ US and international patents.

At KAUST, Hussain leads two Labs and his research advances in core facilities housed in the Division such as the Nanofab Core Lab, Imaging and Characterization Lab, the Analytical Chemistry Lab and CMOR. “KAUST inarguably has the most advanced academic lab infrastructure, and a diverse community where it can evolve into a world-class university.”
