Francesca Serra joined the university in February 2015. Prior to KAUST, Francesca worked as Communication Manager at the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA), Trieste, Italy and at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the Europen Commission, developing protocols to implement anti-fraud EU-regulations. While concentrating on fraud issues concerning food products, she began to move into a scientific communications role, working on videos and promotional materials.
Francesca holds a Bachelor Degree in Geology (University of Trieste, Italy), an MRes in Environmental Sciences (University of Edinburgh, UK) and a Ph.D. in Applied Chemistry (University of Gent, Belgium).
As Senior Communications Officer of CEMSE, Francesca is responsible for managing the divisional communication and coordinating outreach initiatives.
Francesca spent most of her professional career in international positions. "Although I was offered positions in Afghanistan and East Timor with the European Delegations before joining KAUST, I wanted to come here because I had studied Arabic for a few years, and I was intrigued by the thought of living in Saudi Arabia."
Francesca loves the truly multicultural environment of KAUST: "I never experienced something more mesmerizing than sharing my daily life with people of more than one hundred nationalities. We are pioneers in this. I am sure KAUST will have a bright future and will be a beacon for the Kingdom and the entire world. I'm proud that some beams of that light have my colors."
