On April 19, 2021, NASA flew the first helicopter in history on Mars. Ingenuity – the small, unmanned solar helicopter - rose 3 m over the ground and hovered in the thin Martian air for about 40 seconds. Ingenuity landed on Mars attached to the underside of the Perseverance rover on February 18, 2021. Before Ingenuity, the first flight on a planet beyond Earth was an unpowered balloon carried on Venus by the Soviet probe Vega 1, in 1985.
KAUST Assistant Professor Shinkyu Park joined the University in January 2021 to take up his new role as the principal investigator of Distributed Robotics and Autonomy Group. Before joining KAUST, Park was an associate research scholar at Princeton University, U.S., where he engaged in cross-departmental robotics projects.
KAUST recently acted as a host campus for the European Embedded Control Institute's International Graduate School on Control (IGSC). The IGSC is an annual series of 27 one-week graduate modules focusing on different topics of networked and embedded control and is taught to eligible attendees at different locations worldwide. The series is co-sponsored by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Control Systems Society and the International Federation of Automatic Control.
A team of researchers from the KAUST Robotics, Intelligent Systems, and Control (RISC) lab won both the "Best Air Team" special award and the European Global Navigation Satellite Systems Agency special prize during the recent European Robotics League (ERL) Emergency Robots Challenge in Sevilla, Spain. From February 18 to 23, the KAUST RISC team competed with several international university robotics teams from Croatia, France and Poland to complete a set of diverse aerial robotic challenges.
CEMSE Ph.D. student Mohammad Shaqura was recently selected as a finalist for the Best Student Paper Award at the IEEE International Conference on Mechatronics and Automation, ICMA 2017. The paper was among 10 finalists out of over 500 papers for various ICMA awards.
A team from the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) competed in the inaugural Mohamed Bin Zayed International Robotics Challenge (MBZIRC), held in Abu Dhabi, UAE, March 2017, and took a 3rd place finish in the ground robotics challenge.
The award is an international distinction given to scientists for their contributions in the fields of interest of IFAC under the form of technical publications, patents, control solutions, products, software, and leadership in research, development, and education.
