Interdisciplinary Engineer with Entrepreneurial Mindset

Bernard Ghanem is an Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE). He is the Principal Investigator of the Image and Video Understanding Lab (IVUL)  and a member of the Visual Computing Center (VCC). Ghanem is also an Adjunct Senior Research Scientist at the Advanced Sciences Digital Center (ADSC) of Illinois, in Singapore where he leads the Semantic Analysis of Video Project. His research interests lie on Computer Vision and  Machine Learning for advancing in the realm of Artificial Intelligence applied to surveillance and autonomous vehicles, smart traffic control, human-computer interaction as well as robotics for environmental and archaeological investigations.

Education and early career

He holds a Ph.D. and M.Sc. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), in 2010 and 2008 respectively, along with a Post Doc from the same university.

Areas of expertise and current scientific interests

Ghanem focuses on novel computational 3D action recognition methods and tools for artificial vision systems to capture and process visual information. His extended body of work is at the forefront of future city design and optimization as well as security monitoring. Ghanem is the father of cutting-edge avatars for environmental and archaeological investigation, such as the humanoid-diver for underwater archaeological research deeper than 20ms.

Why KAUST?

KAUST is the best place for research and was a natural choice for my career. Here who wants to make a difference can feel part of the international community that initiates educational, economic and social change in the region and addresses current global challenges. Top-notch visualization facilities, pioneering teams, and its scientific environment allow daring to visualize the world in which the most advanced knowledge is a future starting today.
