Autonomous Mobile Robots in Action

From intelligent transportation to precision agriculture, autonomous mobile robotics research has enormous potential to make positive impacts on our society. Adopting robotics technology to make our cities smarter – letting the robots transport people, work in farms, and deliver parcels in our neighborhood – is extremely challenging. This requires the robots to be safe, robust, agile, and social to work in unstructured and human-populated areas. In this master class, leading scholars will deliver lectures on recent advancements in robotics and intelligent transportation research and discuss its implications on our society.
Abstract
The rapid advancement in embedded systems and mobile telecommunications technologies has led to a drastic increase of Internet-of-things (IoT) devices and the emergence of a variety of smart city applications. In such heterogeneous and ubiquitous networks, automated collaboration among IoT devices and their users becomes a necessity to leverage the potential of the connected crowd and foster novel services in different smart city domains.
Abstract
What if a team of robots grew your food for you? In this talk, I will discuss some key advances in robotics, machine learning, and autonomy that could enable teams of small robots to grow more varied, tastier, and healthier food in a fundamentally more sustainable way.

Robotic flight is as old as aviation itself. It might be argued that today, the only robots to whom humans are OK trusting their lives are Airplanes, Air Trains, Elevators, and Escalators. Flying Robots can take many shapes, motions, and missions. Flying robots where dynamics matters constitute the core of this presentation. To begin with, the aerobatic flight will be discussed as it happened at a time when computer power was limited and flying machines were still running with gas engines.
Abstract
Autonomous robotic vessels will transform the city’s waterways. In this lecture, I will present a research project on developing a fleet of autonomous vessels that can construct dynamic structures to create public spaces and transport people and goods in canal environments. We will discuss advancements in robot design, control, and learning to address technical challenges in realizing the fleet’s autonomy.
