Bárbara Nicoly M. Oliveira is an electrical engineering graduate from the Federal University of Campina Grande, Brazil. Bárbara will join KAUST this fall as a M.S./Ph.D. candidate and member of the Photonics Laboratory under the supervision of Professor Boon Ooi.
What was your main subject during your undergraduate degree? Why did you choose it?
My main subjects were telecommunications and electronics. Acting on their boundary, I got involved in the robust field of photonics.
Why have you chosen to study a M.S./Ph.D. at KAUST?
KAUST has a unique charm. The purpose of global collaboration is reflected in each research group and each research center; from administrative division to scientific work, everyone seems committed to collective success here. At KAUST, you can meet brilliant minds from around the world and exchange a lot of knowledge. The University also possesses a commitment to professional development, leadership and a social awareness in its students.
When did your interest in electrical engineering arise? What are your research interests?
This choice was partly motivated by my childhood days spent in my grandfather’s mechanical workshop. My grandfather taught me how to transform the environment around me with creativity, hard work and social commitment.
Being an electrical engineer for me is learning how to apply the physical and mathematical foundations of our environment in a sustainable way so that we can address society's needs without destroying our natural treasures.
My research interests lie in the field of underwater communication through light-based technologies.
What do you do in your spare time? What are you passionate about?
I enjoy cooking seafood, meditating, meeting friends and taking a break at the beach in my spare time. I am also passionate about the marine environment, sailing boats, exploring new places and cultures and doing social work.
What is your future outlook?
Develop my scientific skills in applied photonics. And to contribute, in a useful and accountable way, in the development of new sustainable technologies.
Can you give a piece of advice to students who plan to pursue a M.S./Ph.D. at KAUST?
If you love science, and want to experience your ideas in a motivating and collaborative environment, KAUST’s is the right place for you. In addition to a rich multicultural environment, the KAUST community is very welcoming, and it will be possible to make many friends and share great moments.
