Meet KAUST prospective student: Xiaotian Jin
Xiaotian Jin is a graduate of Wenzhou-Kean University in China (a campus of Kean University in the USA). Xiaotian will join KAUST this fall as a M.S./Ph.D. candidate in the KAUST Stochastic Processes and Applied Statistics research group under the supervision of Professor David Bolin.

Xiaotian Jin is a graduate of Wenzhou-Kean University in China (a campus of Kean University in the USA). Xiaotian will join KAUST this fall as a M.S./Ph.D. candidate in the KAUST Stochastic Processes and Applied Statistics research group under the supervision of Professor David Bolin.
What was your main subject during your undergraduate degree? Why did you choose it?
I obtained a B.Sc. degree in computer science. I chose to study computer science because I enjoy programming. I started programming since high school, and I decided to study computer science at university.
Why have you chosen to study a M.S./Ph.D. at KAUST?
I think KAUST is a fascinating university. At KAUST, I can meet researchers from all over the world, and not only participate in high-level research but also learn from different people and cultures.
When did your interest in statistics arise? What are your research interests?
My interest in statistics arose because of my previous advisor; she was a researcher in the data mining field. My advisor taught me many interesting things and led me to the field of data analytics.
My research interests include statistical modeling and spatio-temporal statistics.
What do you do in your spare time? What are you passionate about?
I enjoy reading, watching sports games and playing video games. I hope I can travel to a lot of places during my future vacations.
What is your future outlook?
I haven’t set myself a clear goal for my future career. However, I am excited about working and contributing to the KAUST Stochastic Processes and Applied Statistics research group.
Can you give a piece of advice to students who plan to pursue a M.S./Ph.D. at KAUST?
My advice to the prospective students is to set a goal, keep working and be persistent.
