Overview
Abstract
Assistive technologies can play a vital role in improving many people’s quality of life. They can assist a person in walking or driving a wheelchair or simply inform a visually impaired person of the environment. In this talk, two application of wearable cameras in context of assistive technology I will be presented. First, for wheelchair users who also sever from upper limb mobility, a head-mounted wearable camera has been utilized to allow hands-free wheelchair navigation control by measuring head movements based on wearable camera’s image feed analysis. Second, a head mounted wearable camera has also been used to assist visually impaired people in navigation and alert them of unsafe environment by using object recognition, face recognition and face expression recognition methods on wearable camera’s image feed.
Brief Biography
Mohammed Kutbi is an assistant professor at the department of Computer Science and a member of the Artificial Intelligence Unit at Saudi Electronic University (SEU). His research interests lie in the broad areas of computer vision and robotics. Recent work includes motion segmentation, domain adaptation and human-robot interaction. He received his MS and Ph.D. from the department of Computer Science at Stevens Institute of Technology, and a BS from the department of Information Technology at King Abdulaziz University.
