Abstract

As one of the founding departments in the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) eighty-five years ago, the Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) has been actively involved in both fundamental and applied research to advance the frontier of knowledge to serve Hong Kong, its surrounding region and beyond. The research foci of the department are in four major areas under three Research Centres and a Research Consortium under the University Niche Area scheme. As one of its constituents, the Consortium for Sound and Vibration Research (CSVR) carries out research in a wide spectrum of research topics, ranging from vibration and noise control, fluid-structure interaction, and acoustic/elastic/mechanic meta-materials/structures etc. This talk will briefly introduce some main research topics that are being carried out in CSVR. Challenges and opportunities related to these on-going research activities will also be discussed.

Brief Biography

Dr. Li Cheng is currently a Chair Professor, Director of Consortium for Sound and Vibration Research (CSVR) and Associate Dean (Research) of Faculty of Engineering at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He received his BSc degree from Xi'an Jiaotong University, China and Ph.D. degree from the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Lyon (INSA-Lyon), France. He became a faculty member at Laval University, Canada in 1992, rising up to the rank of Full Professor before joining Hong Kong PolyU in 2000. He was the Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering from 2011 to 2014. Dr. Cheng published extensively in the field of sound and vibration, structural health monitoring, smart structure and fluid-structure interaction. He currently serves as Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Sound and Vibration, Associate Editor of the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, Associate Editor of Structural Health Monitoring: An International Journal and an editorial board member of a few other journals. Dr. Cheng is an elected Fellow of Canadian Academy of Engineering, a Distinguished Fellow of the International Institute of Acoustics and Vibration (IIAV), a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, the Acoustical Society of China, IMechE, Hong Kong Institution of Engineers and Hong Kong Institute of Acoustics. He was the President of the Hong Kong Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. He is now a Board Director of IIAV (International Institutes of Acoustics and Vibration) and the President-elect of the I-INCE (International Institutes of Noise Control Engineering).
