About

Dr. Luigi Lombardo joined the Extreme Statistics Research Group and worked as Postdoctoral Research Fellow from April, 2016, to December, 2018, under the joined supervision of Prof. Raphaël Huser and Prof. Martin Mai.

After his postdoc at KAUST, Luigi moved to ITC, University of Twente, Netherlands, where he embraced an academic career by becoming an Assistant Professor of Soil Science. See his personal website here.

Education and early career

Luigi Lombardo received his Ph.D. from Universita’ degli Studi di Palermo, Palermo, Italy in 2015. He joined KAUST as a postdoc in April 2016, and moved to ITC, University of Twente, Netherlands, in December 2018.

Areas of expertise and current scientific interests

Dr.  Luigi Lombardo's interest lies in spatial predictive modeling, this being primarily applied in the framework of natural hazard. His research focused on landslide susceptibility and its transferability between different geographic contexts by testing several statistical approaches (e.g. Binary Logistic Regression, Stochastic Gradient Treeboost, Maximum Entropy). From an initial interest in rainfall-induced landslides, Dr. Lombargo has recently shifted his attention to earthquake-induced landslides. At the same time, he is also investigating how effective spatial prediction can be when modeling other physical processes (aquifer vulnerability and dissolution feature occurrences) or properties (soil organic carbon).
