Alumni Dr. Joakim Beck served in our Stochastic Numerics group at KAUST from 2016 to January 2024, first as a Postdoctoral Fellow and later as a Research Scientist. He has recently accepted a faculty position at the Center for Integrative Petroleum Research (CIPR) at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM), and started in February 2024.
With a solid background in chemical engineering, stochastics, uncertainty quantification, numerical methods, and statistical science, Dr. Beck is well-equipped to contribute to CIPR's research initiatives. His expertise is expected to support the center's goal of advancing research that benefits the petroleum industry and contributes to the economic development of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Dr. Beck's work will primarily focus on upstream petroleum research, specifically in areas of multiscale multiphysics modeling, geomechanics, and geophysics.
During his tenure at KAUST, Dr. Beck was involved in significant research projects aimed at understanding geological processes. His contributions include efforts to quantify uncertainties in linking surface deformation with lower crustal shear zones, clustering of surface faulting earthquakes, the creation of innovative earthquake dating tools, and the use of seismic wave propagation in addressing inverse problems. Dr. Beck's work has been valuable to our group, and we anticipate that his future contributions at CIPR will be impactful. We wish him success in his new role and look forward to seeing how his work will continue to influence the field.
