KAUST Prof. Mohamed Slim Alouini and Prof. Ibrahim Hoteit have been awarded the 2020 Kuwait prize

The Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) has announced that His Highness Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Crown Prince of the State of Kuwait and the Chairman of KFAS’s Board has endorsed the decisions of the KFAS Board of Directors regarding the recipients of the 2020 Kuwait Prize in the various fields and the recipient of the Al-Nouri Prize for Best Dissertation in the Field of Education.

Dr. Khaled Ali Al-Fadhel, KFAS Director General, stated that the Prize in the Field of Basic Sciences (area of Earth Sciences) was awarded jointly to Professor Farouk ElSayed Mohamed Elbaz, the Director Emeritus of the Center for Remote Sensing at Boston University in the United States and Dr. Ibrahim Hoteit, Professor of Earth Sciences and Engineering and Professor of Applied Mathematics and Computational Sciences at the King Abdulla University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia. Professor Elbaz is recognized for his pioneering research and impressive research career in various scientific fields, ranging from earth archaeology to remote sensing, as well as earth and lunar geology. Dr Hoteit is recognized for his pioneering research in ocean modelling, remote sensing, Red Sea eddy dynamics, and the development of new techniques in data assimilation and modelling that have environmental applications of global significance.

In the Field of Applied Sciences (area of Engineering Sciences), the Prize is awarded to Dr. Mohamed-Slim Alouini, Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at King Abdulla University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia, for his groundbreaking research in the area of  wireless , optical and vehicular communications,  including low-power communications for the internet of things, as well as his valuable contribution to  the development of the 3G, 4G and satellite systems.
