CBRC's Alumni Dr. Tanvir Alam recently received The Early Career Researcher Award from Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), Doha on its first annual Research Day on September 7, 2022.  Research Day was an opportunity for HBKU to recognize and honor the accomplishments of faculty and scientists, early-career researchers, and students, with the presentation of research awards in different categories.

HBKU is a homegrown research and graduate studies University that acts as a catalyst for positive transformation in Qatar and the region while having a global impact.

Dr. Alam is an Assistant Professor at the College of Science and Engineering of HBKU. His research work is centered around the application of artificial intelligence (AI) on the diagnosis and prognosis of communicable and non-communicable diseases. He is also working on the transcription regulation and interaction of non-coding RNAs and their roles in human diseases. He served as a reviewer in a number of international conferences and reputed journals. His vision is to establish personalized healthcare system for community at larger scale.

Scientific Interests

His current scientific interests is to establish personalized healthcare system for community at larger scale in Qatar. To achieve this, it requires the cohesion of scientists, clinicians, policy makers and all other stakeholders to orchestrate their expertise and combine them in a seamless manner.

Currently Dr. Alam and his team are working on multiple aspects of health informatics, covering bioinformatics, chemoinformatic, imaging informatics, clinical informatics and public health.

"As healthcare domain is a big umbrella, we need expertise in multiple fields of health informatics. From bioinformatics perspective, we are focusing on the non-coding RNA, their regulation and interaction with other molecules for exploring their involvement in multiple diseases including cancer.  From clinical informatics perspective, we are actively working on obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease covering patients’ multiple ethnicities. We are working on risk factor stratification, improving diagnosis plan, and recommending personalized treatment plan for patients from the communicable disease. For medical imaging perspective, we are closely working with medical practitioners to integrate AI-enabled system into current hospital setup. From public health perspective, we are working on childhood obesity and mother’s health to avoid any health-related complexities for newborn babies."

Fond memories of CBRC

"CBRC had a huge impact in my career. The research facilities and exposure is unique to me. During my time at CBRC, I learned how to work in a multi-culture environment with many people from diverse backgrounds in interdisciplinary fields. I was heavily involved in projects where I learnt how to apply computational skills in biological science problems and improve the healthcare system for the community. More specifically, I was working closely with Late Prof. Vladimir Bajic, Prof. Xin Gao and Prof. Stefan Arold. They shared their wealth of knowledge, insights and I learned a lot from them. Working with such world class professors gave me a lot of exposure and more importantly the confidence to perform well."

CBRC congratulates Dr. Tanvir Alam on his great achievement. Keep growing and keep on achieving!
