BioLabs: Innovative Telecommunications Solutions Enabling Remote Biology Laboratories

Congratulations to Dr. Baha Eddine Youcef Belmekki for being awarded the U.S. National Academy of Science fellowship this year to conduct his impactful research on expanding education to unconnected and underserved areas.

As part of his fellowship, and in collaboration with KAUST UNESCO Chair on Education for Connecting the Unconnected, Dr. Belmekki served as a visiting researcher at UC Santa Cruz within the Genomics Institute. There, he focused on enabling cloud-based remote biology labs through various communication technologies.

This collaboration has led to the publication of the paper titled “Reducing Education Inequalities through Cloud-Enabled Live-Cell Biotechnology,” which you can access here: https://www.cell.com/action/showPdf?pii=S0167-7799%2824%2900209-9

We are hopeful that this successful collaboration between the UNESCO Chair at KAUST and UCSC will continue to expand these innovative labs to regions in South America and Africa over the next year.
