Biological systems transmit thousands of invaluable information about our health, through a "chemical language". Biosensors are devices that listen to this complex language and translate it into a language that we humans can understand.
Dr. Veerappan Mani is currently a Research Scientist at the Sensors Lab, in the Electrical Engineering Department, CEMSE, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). He is one of the world’s top 2% scientists since 2020.
Education and Early Career
Dr. Veerappan Mani received his Ph.D. from the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, National Taipei University of Technology (NTUT), Taiwan in 2014. He worked as a research assistant professor at the Institute of Biochemical and Biomedical Engineering, Taipei Tech, Taiwan, from 2016 to 2019. He was a research visiting scientist at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), U.S.A. in 2023.
Dr. Mani is an experienced researcher in developing nanomaterials for sensors, biosensors, and energy devices. Using biological, electrochemical, and analytical knowledge, he functionalizes, tunes, integrates, hybridizes, and modifies materials and provides the appropriate materials solution. He has published more than 115 SCI papers (citations: 5898; h-index: 42). He is serving as an editorial board member for the International Journal of Molecular Sciences (MDPI; I.F 5.923), associate editor for Frontiers in Materials (Frontiers; I.F 3.515), special issue editor for Micromachines (MDPI: I.F 2.891), and review editor for Frontiers in Electronics. He has been included in the world's top 2% scientists list published by Standford University researchers, 2020-2021 (Categories: Energy & Analytical Chemistry; Rank = 1218/186014). He is recognized as the “2023 Rising Star in Measurement Science" by the Journal 'ACS Measurement Science Au'.
Research Interests
Dr. Mani's current research areas are, (1) Developing smart hydrogel-coated microneedles for extraction, sensing, and delivery (hospital on a chip), (2) Bioengineering 2D materials for point-of-care diagnosis of cardiovascular disease biomarkers, (3) Integrating sensing devices for emerging pharmaceutical contaminants in water resources, (4) Exploring enzyme properties of single-atom catalysts for analyzing oxidative stress biomarkers and gasotransmitters, and (5) Developing laser-scribed graphene electrodes for large-scale applications.
