Nanomaterials and Nanostructure Based Energy Efficient Edge and Fluidic Computing for Internet of Things Applications

In this talk, I will address these questions with a focus on smart and multifunctional nanomaterial-based memory devices than can sense different physical qualities of the environment (Memsors) in addition to pressure-driven microfluidic logic gates which can process and analyze non-electronic media in an attempt to explore, enable and empower a wider range of IoT applications.

Nanomaterials and Nanostructure Based Energy Efficient In-Memory Sensing

In this talk, I will present the potential of nano-islands grown by the atomic layer deposition (ALD) in addition to novel material combinations in scaled memory devices. Moreover, in order to relax the scalability requirement, I will introduce an integrated potential single device solution by infusing memory device which can monitor and remember our actions and the surrounding environment. Such a device performs the roles of both a MEMory and a senSOR at once and is referred to as a MEMSOR. The MEMSOR is directly programmed by external physical stimuli rather than an applied electric potential as in conventional devices. As a result, the MEMSOR leads to faster data analysis, lower footprint area, energy consumption, and ideally, the cost of the system. Finally, the MEMSOR device will be based on a MOSFET architecture with a mature manufacturing process, and thus it can be integrated with conventional Flash devices on the same silicon wafer with minimal additional process steps.

Magnetic random access memory (MRAM) devices have been widely studied since the 1960s. During this time, the size of spintronic devices has continued to decrease. Consequently, there is now an urgent need for new low-dimensional magnetic materials to mimic the traditional structures of spintronics at the nanoscale. Jr-Hau He, KAUST associate professor of electrical engineering, has recently been elected as an SPIE Fellow for his achievements in solar cells, photodetectors and semiconductor optics research. SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, annually recognizes society members who have made significant scientific and technical contributions in the multidisciplinary fields of optics, photonics and imaging, and for their outstanding technical contributions and service to SPIE.
