Sadeed Bin Sayed
About
Sadeed Bin Sayed is a Ph.D. candidate in Electrical engineering at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) under the supervision of Professor Hakan Bagci. He received his B.Tech. degree in electronics and communication engineering from the National Institute of Technology Calicut, Calicut, India, in 2004, and the M.Tech. degree in communications engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, New Delhi, India, in 2007. From July 2007 to May 2008, he worked as a Member with Technical Staff Digibee Microsystems, Bangalore, India. In May 2008, he joined as an Engineer with Qualcomm India Pvt. Ltd, Hyderabad, India, Mr. Sayed was awarded Honorable Mention twice and ranked third in the Student Paper Competitions at the IEEE International Symposiums on Antennas and Propagation (APS), July 2014 and July 2015, and at the International Conference on Review of Progress in Applied Computational Electromagnetics (ACES), March 2014, respectively.
Research Interests
His research interests include time-domain volume integral equations and their efficient, accurate, and stable MOT-based solutions and Computational electromagnetics.
Why did you choose KAUST?
I was looking for a good university at which to pursue my Ph.D. in an interdisciplinary field. I wanted a place where I could interact with people with high proficiency in different fields. More importantly, I realized from my past industrial experience that good research demands state-of-the-art laboratory facilities. As KAUST was receiving much international coverage for its vision and its facilities, I started to hear about the University and its research. The more I learned about KAUST, the more I was convinced that it was the place where I could pursue my goals, and I eventually ended up being accepted here for my Ph.D. studies.
How is KAUST helping you to fulfill your dream?
Just as I had hoped, I joined a research team whose work is very interdisciplinary. My supervisor and our research assistants helped me to quickly begin and move forward with my research. As KAUST provides financial support as well as on-campus housing, I have been able to spend more time and focus strongly on my research. Supercomputing facilities like the supercomputer Shaheen are available for students, and I use them on a daily basis to advance my research. KAUST also offers lecture series; these enable me to learn about the areas of expertise of well-known researchers and also become informed about areas of advancement in my field and in other fields.
What is your research topic?
My research focuses on the study of electromagnetic interactions between different types of objects. I use computers to simulate the electromagnetic interactions so that better insight is provided on the physics of the problem. This helps in testing and verifying problems with electronic equipment before the actual equipment is manufactured. This also aids electronic designers in developing and testing artificial materials that have certain desired electromagnetic properties using computers. My work is also helpful in developing electromagnetic equipment that is immune to outside interactions.
What are your research accomplishments so far?
So far I have developed an explicit solver for the time domain equation which is faster than other time-domain solvers for low-frequency problems. My work was presented at PIERS 2013 in Stockholm, Sweden. I also developed a new scheme to stabilize the time domain solvers for high contrast problems. Using this solver I am able to solve problems involving very high permittivity without losing any accuracy. I am currently writing a paper about this work for publication in IEEE Transactions.
What do you think about the KAUST environment and life?
KAUST has a lot of facilities to help students to have a good social life on campus. Sports facilities and skills development workshops give an extra dimension to our daily lives. Because KAUST is located on the coast of the Red Sea, living on campus is a unique experience, and we can spend our leisure time as if we are at a holiday destination. Social events like the yearly Flavors Food.
