Prof. Xin Gao has assumed the role of CEMSE CS Program Chair, marking a significant development for our academic community. The Computer Science (CS) program educates students in creating computational infrastructure and applying computational methods to various areas. CS offers six tracks, each leading to a frontier of computing: Artificial Intelligence, Computer Systems, High-Performance Computing, Theoretical Computer Science, Visual Computing, and Computational Biosciences.
Prof. Xin Gao's group focuses on bioinformatics, computational biology, machine learning, and big data. The team is dedicated to building computational models, designing efficient algorithms, and developing machine learning techniques to address key open problems from protein sequence analysis to protein 3D structure determination, protein function prediction, and understanding the roles of proteins in complex biological networks.
Operating at the intersection of computer science and biology, almost all group members have a background in computer science. In the realm of computer science, the focus is on developing theories, algorithms, and methods related to deep learning, probabilistic graphical models, kernel methods, matrix factorization, optimization, and graph algorithms. This represents curiosity-driven research.
