BORG team win at the KAUST-NVIDIA GPU Hackathon 2022

Congratulations to Senay Kafkas, Maxat Kulmanov and Fernando Zhapa Camacho of the Bio-Ontology Research Group (BORG) on winning at the KAUST-NVIDIA GPU Hackathon 2022. The 8th edition of the Hackathon on Accelerating Scientific Applications using Graphical Processing Units (GPUs) was held at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), twelve teams of students and researchers enjoyed the opportunity to accelerate their codes in GPU’s under the guidance of expert mentors of NVIDIA, Codee, KAUST Supercomputing Lab (KSL) and KAUST core labs.

The 8th edition of the Hackathon on Accelerating Scientific Applications using Graphical Processing Units (GPUs) was held at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), twelve teams of students and researchers enjoyed the opportunity to accelerate their codes in GPU’s under the guidance of expert mentors of NVIDIA, Codee, KAUST Supercomputing Lab (KSL) and KAUST core labs.

The program this year highlighted the trends in GPU accelerated computing in High Performance Computing (HPC) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in general, and a special focus on use cases in Bioscience. The program included keynote speakers, plenary sessions, tutorials and hackathons.

The team from BORG presented their work on Protein function using GPU. The project explained the use of multimodal biological data for the task of protein function prediction. The team collected data from various sources that used different machine learning models, for which distributing the learning process across several GPUs was a requirement.

Senay Kafkas is a Research Scientist in the BORG group. Senay's main research interests include biomedical text/data mining and data integration. She develops methods for analyzing large and heterogeneous data for finding solutions to various problems in the domain of biomedicine.

Maxat Kulmanov is a Research Scientist in the BORG group. Maxat's research interests include bioinformatics, knowledge representation and reasoning, machine learning, neural networks, semantic web, and algorithms. He is interested in knowledge discovery and data integration using artificial intelligence and semantic web technologies in biology and biomedicine.

Fernando Zhapa-Camacho is a Ph.D. student in the BORG group under the supervision of Professor Robert Hoehndorf. Fernando’s research interests include knowledge representation and reasoning, machine learning and bioinformatics. He is interested in artificial intelligence, category theory and logic integration with applications in biology.
