Maxat Kulmanov, a Ph.D. candidate under the supervision of Assistant Professor Robert Hoehndorf, defended his thesis proposal on July 31, 2018.

Maxat's presentation, "Predicting Gene Knockout Phenotypes", showed the importance of using accurate computational prediction of protein functions. He developed a computational tool that is able to identify phenotypes that may be associated with a loss (or gain) of function in proteins.

His thesis proposal was well received by committee members Professor Vladimir Bajic, Professor Stefan Arold and Assistant Professor Robert Hoehndorf.
