Professor Alouini honored at OIC Summit on Science and Technology 2017

Mohamed-Slim Alouini, Professor of Electrical Engineering in the Computer, Electrical, and Mathematical Sciences & Engineering Division (CEMSE) of the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Thuwal, Makkah Province, Saudi Arabia, was recently honored with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Science and Technology (S&T) Achievement Award from the President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev.

The summit of the OIC on S&T, which was held for the first time on 10-11 September 2017, brought together in Astana, Kazakhstan, 15 heads of state and more than 80 foreign delegations who started the consultations by paying tribute to five scientists selected for their efforts to serve their countries and the Islamic world through their achievements in science.

Dr. Yousef A. Al-Othaimeen, OIC Secretary General, emphasized the meaning of these awards: “Convinced of the importance of acknowledging and commending Muslim scientists and researchers for their outstanding contributions to their areas of specialization, today, the OIC will be honoring a group of them with the OIC S&T Achievement Award. These prominent scientists have charted with their knowledge and excellence for the advancement and progress of their societies and countries”.

Prof. Alouini was honored in Engineering for his long-term research in Telecommunication. The other selected scientists were: for Chemistry, Prof. Yusuf Yagci from Istanbul Technical University, Istanbul, Turkey; for Medicine, Dr. Assan Jaye from the Medical Research Council in Banjul, Gambia, for Physics, Prof. Rajaâ Cherkaoui El Moursli from the Mohammed V University in Rabat, Morocco; and for Biology, Dr. Yerlan Ramankulov from the National Center for Biotechnology in Astana, Kazhakstan.

Prof. Alouini received the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Pasadena, CA, USA, in 1998. He served as a faculty member in the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN, USA, then in the Texas A&M University at Qatar, Education City, Doha, Qatar before joining KAUST as a Professor of Electrical Engineering in 2009. His current research interests include the modeling, design, and performance analysis of wireless communication systems.
