Meet KAUST New Student: Ruibo Wang

-By Taruna Rapaka

Ruibo Wang is a communication engineering graduate from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC), Chengdu, China, who joined KAUST in January 2021. Wang first came to KAUST as a visiting student and was instantly impressed by the University's excellent research atmosphere and high academic standards. This combination of factors piqued his interest in choosing KAUST to further his academic career.

Ruibo joined KAUST as a M.S./Ph.D. candidate and member of the Communication Theory Lab under the supervision of Professor Mohamed-Slim Alouini.

What was your main subject during your undergraduate degree? Why did you choose it?

I majored in communication engineering. It is a vast field and includes a practical major. I chose it because I enjoy learning the theory, software, hardware, and doing what I am interested in.

When did you first become interested in electrical and computer engineering? What are your research interests?

It was during my sophomore year. I found this major has excellent application prospects. I am interested in aerial networks and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). At KAUST, I am now working on applying stochastic geometry to solve the problem of aerial networking with UAVs.

What do you do in your spare time? What are you passionate about?

In my spare time, I exercise and watch movies. I am passionate about designing algorithms and playing badminton.

What is your future outlook?

I want to be a professor in the future, continue doing academic research, and apply the results to real life.

Can you give a piece of advice to students who plan to pursue a M.S./Ph.D. at KAUST?

If you plan to pursue a M.S./Ph.D., please place great importance on math and other foundation courses. If you are a student who enjoys fundamental mathematics, you will find that KAUST is the place for you.
