Abstract

In the first part of this thesis, we have discussed the Cram ́er-Rao lower bound (CRLB) to evaluate the performance of beam tracking for a joint beam tracking and symbol detection scheme in deep-space optical communications. The CRLB is used to analyze the tracking performance for two types of observations based on pulse position modulation (PPM) data symbols: i) information in the PPM slot period and ii) information in PPM symbol period. In the second part of the thesis, we studied the comparison of PPM symbol detection performance under pointing errors for FSO receivers: one which is based on an array of small detectors. We provide the complexity analysis of fusion algorithms such as equal gain combiner (EGC), selection combiner (SC), switch combiner (SWC), and maximal ratio combiner (MRC). In the following section, we highlight the angle-of-arrival estimation of narrow Gaussian beams for mobile platforms. We derive a mathematical framework to capture the attenuation caused by an energy spot. In the next chapter, we then provide the outage performance analysis of the hybrid RF/FSO work that are based on tracking angle- of-arrival. We show that the outage can be improved by using a hybrid RF/FSO framework. In the last part of the thesis, we illustrate the outline of the future works that are based on IoT-based non-terrestrial network and satellite communication which aim at solving the issue of global connectivity in remote areas particularly.

Brief Biography

Mingcheng is a Ph.D. student in the Communication Theory Lab (CTL) under the supervision of Professor Mohamed-Slim Alouini at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST).

He is focusing in the area of wireless communication, optical wireless communication. He’s currently working on the beam tracking of optical wireless communication.
