Abstract: Network Engineering as Distinct Academic Discipline Beyond the TEE Movement Network Engineering is now recognized as distinct education discipline in the USA and in many other countries. This development came about with ABET’s1 2015 (current) Criteria for Electrical, Computer, Communications, Telecommunication(s) and Similarly Named Engineering Programs. Few academic programs focused on this area of study in the past. More programs are expected to emerge now with progress in this field and with ABET recognition of it. Visible light communication

The wireless communication technology has been evolved from 1G to 5G networks. The next 6G era will bring about higher demands for bandwidth and speed. Visible light communication (VLC) shows great potential in providing high speed and secure communication link by utilizing the unregulated visible light spectrum to carry the data. In this seminar, the overview of VLC will be presented first. The devices and components developed for VLC network will then be reviewed and discussed in details. I will also briefly talk about the application of underwater communication application by using visible light at the end of the seminar.

Gbit/s Visible Light Communications

Visible light communication (VLC or LiFi) has been a topic of intense research after the idea was proposed in 2011. To date, a data rate of multiple 100s Mbps has been demonstrated using LED as light source. At KAUST, we are developing the next generation of SSL lighting using visible laser diodes (LDs) and superluminescent diodes (SLDs). Laser diodes and SLDs do not suffer efficiency droop at high current densities. This allows for the design of lamps using a single, small footprint, light-emitting chip operating at high current densities. Using a single chip reduces system costs compared with LEDs because the system uses less material per chip, requires fewer chips, and employs simplified optics and a simplified heat-sink. The chip area required for LED technologies will be significantly reduced using LD/SLD-based solid-state lighting. This technology will also enable highly controllable beams in term of tunable throw distance, tunable color temperature and rendering index. Multiple Gbit/s VLC links have been demonstrated using LD/SLD as transmitters. In this talk, I will focus on the recent progress of visible diode LD/SLD-based lighting technology and high-speed transmitters and receivers for multiple-Gbps VLC and underwater wireless optical communication.

Communications, Computing, and Security for the Internet of Things Era and Beyond

This talk will first discuss the communications, computation, and security challenges for the IoT era and motivate a systematic methodology to address them. The talk will then overview some relevant problems and their potential solutions. Future research direction will also be highlighted.

In this talk, I will speak on a novel antenna technology, referred to as fluid antenna, that adopts a software-controlled, position-flexible antenna to operate on the best signal envelope within a given space. This talk presents some early results on fluid antenna systems, which shows its potential for improving wireless communication performance.

On the resolution of a theoretical question related to the nature of local training in federated learning

In this talk, I will explain the problem, its solution, and some subsequent work generalizing, extending and improving the ProxSkip method in various ways. We study distributed optimization methods based on the local training (LT) paradigm - achieving improved communication efficiency by performing richer local gradient-based training on the clients before parameter averaging - which is of key importance in federated learning. Looking back at the progress of the field in the last decade, we identify 5 generations of LT methods: 1) heuristic, 2) homogeneous, 3) sublinear, 4) linear, and 5) accelerated. The 5th generation, initiated by the ProxSkip method of Mishchenko et al (2022) and its analysis, is characterized by the first theoretical confirmation that LT is a communication acceleration mechanism.

Towards The Implementation of Reliable Hyperloop Communication Systems

This work is geared toward the design and analysis of reliable Hyperloop communication systems. Hyperloops pose several challenges for the communication system for providing a reliable communication system while dealing with a complex structure, moving at tremendous speeds inside an evacuated tube. The adopted sealed steel-structured tube in the Hyperloop prevents signal penetration, isolating the inner world from the outside and creating a highly scattering environment for electromagnetic (EM) waves. Furthermore, the exceptionally high speed of the traveling pod results in severe Doppler shifts and frequent handovers, leading to increased transmission errors and delays. We propose a novel system configuration where wireless transmitters or access points (APs) are placed inside the tube to communicate with the moving receiver using optical fiber as a backhaul link.
