A major bottleneck in true SoC implementation is efficient on-chip antenna realization due to its large size and silicon substrate losses. Emerging wireless applications at mm-wave frequencies (WPAN at 60 GHz, Automotive Radars at 77 GHz and passive imaging at 94 Ghz) require smaller antennas due to shorter wavelengths and thus have eased the integration of antennas with the circuits on the same chip. However, low antenna efficiency still remains a major challenge. In addition, to maintain system's efficiency in today's congested frequency bands, re-configurable systems can play a vital role. This project is focused to develop an efficient and reconfigurable (both frequency and polarization) on-chip antenna in a CMOS compatible Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) process.
