Optical wireless communication (OWC) has gained its momentum in complementing the role of RF communication. Indoor visible-light communication (VLC), outdoor/terrestrial free-space communication (FSO), and underwater optical wireless communications (UWOC) all uses lasers and light-emitting diodes in realizing high data rate in the Mbit/s to Gbit/sec range. In this talk, we discuss the recent progress in the field of VLC and UWOC, focusing on how researchers capitalize on the advances and innovation in AlInGaN-based devices, to realize compact, small-footprint communication system and technology.

Biography: Dr. Tien Khee Ng, a senior member of IEEE, received his Ph.D. and M.Eng. in electrical and electronic engineering from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, in 2005 and 2001, respectively. He was a member of technical staff with Tinggi Technologies, a high brightness blue LED start-up company at Science-Park-I, Singapore, from 2004–2006, and later a research fellow at NTU until 2009. He is currently a senior research scientist with Ooi-group at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Saudi Arabia. Also a co-principal-investigator for the KACST (King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology) Technology Innovation Center at KAUST, his research primarily focuses on the development of wide-bandgap nitride-based quantum-confined and nanowires structures for addressing efficient light-emitters, communications, and energy harvesting.
