Implantable and Wearable Microelectronic Devices to Improve Quality of Life for People with Disabilities

Implantable medical devices (IMD) and neuroprostheses are finding applications in new therapies thanks to advancements in microelectronics, sensors, RF communications, and medicine, which have resulted in embedding more functions in IMDs that occupy smaller spaces down to millimeters and consume less power, while offering therapies for more complex diseases and disabilities. I will address the latest developments in key building blocks for state-of-the-art IMDs.

Introduction to High Performance Computational Chemistry with an Application of Hierarchical Matrices

This talk begins with an introduction to quantum chemistry for HPC researchers. We discuss the main computational kernels, how their performance is limited by various bottlenecks, and algorithms and implementations that improve performance. One particular kernel is the calculation of the Coulomb matrix. Whereas the fast multipole method (FMM) can be used to rapidly compute the Coulomb potential for sets of point charges, continuous variants of FMM were developed in the 1990s for sets of charge distributions that arise in quantum chemistry.

Hommood Alrowais is a Ph.D. student based in the department of electrical and computer engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S. Alrowais graduated from KAUST in 2010 as part of the University's first graduating class with a master's degree in electrical engineering.
