Abstract
This lecture will review research trends of III-V compound semiconductor ultra-high efficiency photovoltaic (PV) cells based on multiple junctions and quantum well/dot approaches. It will also introduce field trials of highly efficient green hydrogen production through the direct connection of electrolyzers and concentrator PV modules with the above-mentioned compound semiconductor solar cells built-in.
Brief Biography
Yoshiaki Nakano received the B. E., M. S., and Ph. D. degrees in electronic engineering, all from the University of Tokyo, Japan, in 1982, 1984, and 1987, respectively. In 1987, he joined the Department of Electronic Engineering, at the University of Tokyo, became an associate professor in 1992, a full professor in 2000, and the department head in 2001. He moved to the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology (RCAST), at the University of Tokyo, in 2002 as a professor, and served as the Director General of the center from 2010 to 2013. Then he moved back to the Engineering School to fill up the current professorship position with the Dept. of EEIS. Since 2020, he has also been serving as the Deputy-Director for Research, Presidential Endowed Chair of MbSC2030, attached directly to the University of Tokyo president's office. Dr. Nakano is currently a member of the Science Council of Japan (SCJ) and the Chair of the IEEE Tokyo Section. He also is the President of the Japan Institute of Electronics Packaging (JIEP). He used to serve as the VP of the Institute of Electronics, Communication, and Information Engineers (IEICE), the President of the Electronics Society, IEICE, an elected member of the Board of Governors of IEEE LEOS, a member of the Board of Directors of the Japan Society of Applied Physics (JSAP), the Editor-in-Chief of Applied Physics Express (APEX) and Japanese Journal of Applied Physics (JJAP), and a member of the Board of Directors of JIEP. He is a Fellow of IEEE (2023), a Fellow of OPTICA (2023), a Fellow of IEICE, and a Fellow of JSAP.
