Dr. Sakandar Rauf and research team from Prof Atif Shamim’s group, developed fully screen printed gentle-to-skin wet ECG electrodes integrated with a scaled-down printed circuit board (PCB) packaged inside a 3D-printed antenna-on-package (AoP). This is the first wireless ECG system employing fully screen-printed electrodes developed in Saudi Arabia. The gentle-to-skin wet ECG electrode screen printed on a plastic substrate only require 265 times less metal for the conductive part and 176 times less ECG electrode gel than the standard commercial wet ECG electrodes. In addition, the electrically small AoP achieved a maximum read range of 142 m and offers a four times larger wireless communication range than the typical commercial chip antenna. . Because of its low cost and easy-to-use nature, it is expected that there will be widespread use of this technology.
