Silicon transistors are the most manufactured good in the human history. They are the brains of every digital and analog technology today including artificial intelligence, electric cars, smartphones, and space shuttles. Over the last few decades, the size of silicon transistors has shrunk astronomically from millimeter to tens of nanometer to reduce power consumption and improve performance, i.e. following the famous Moore’s law. However, severe electronic and manufacturing problems have emerged such as large leakage current and high costs. To address this issue, researchers at KAUST’s Advanced Semiconductor Lab led by Prof Xiaohang Li have invented a groundbreaking way that could revolutionize the transistor technologies. In this project, the students are expected to learn multi-gate transistors and engage with transistor fabrication and testing in the state-of-the-art labs at KAUST.
