Mohammed Zahed M. Khan (EE PhD Candidate) and Dr. Boon Ooi (Professor of EE) won the Best Paper Award (Photonics Track) in the second Saudi International Electronics, Communications, and Photonics Conference (SIECPC), held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, during 27 -7 30 April 2013. The winning paper reports a novel model to understand the physics behind and demonstrate some unique features of semiconductor broadband quantum-dash lasers.
Mohammed joined the Photonics Lab lead by Prof. Ooi on September 2009. Since he joined KAUST, he has been involved in the research and development of novel broad emission quantum-dash lasers that could have important applications in optical sensors, spectroscopy, a highly sensitive optical gyroscope for medical, and military applications, and energy-efficient optical fiber communication and computer communication systems, etc. Mohammed obtained his Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) in 2004.
