Knowledge-based methods in biomedicine

The life sciences have invested significant resources in the development and application of semantic technologies to make research data accessible and interlinked, and to enable the integration and analysis of data. Utilizing the semantics associated with research data in data analysis approaches is often challenging. Now, novel methods are becoming available that combine symbolic methods and statistical methods in Artificial Intelligence. In my talk, I will describe how to apply knowledge-based methods for the analysis of biological and biomedical data, in particular identification of gene-disease associations and drug targets.

Daniel Osorio Barreto, is an economics graduate who joined KAUST this fall from Universidad Autónoma de Manizales, Colombia. He is as a Ph.D. student and member of the KAUST Biostatistics Group under the supervision of Professor Hernando Ombao.

Shuhao Jiao

Shuhao Jiao is a Postdoctoral Fellow of the KAUST Biostatistics Research Group. Before joining KAUST, Dr. Jiao received his Ph.D. in Statistics in 2019 from University of California, Davis. He is interested in statistical learning of complicated neuroimage data. He addresses these problems using novel statistical theory and methods in functional data analysis and machine learning. Mara Sherlin Talento

We do not gain confidence through measuring what we know, but through quantifying how much we do not know. Mara Sherlin Talento is a PhD student in the Biostatistics group of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, under the supervision of Prof. Hernando Ombao. She finished her Master’s degree in University of the Philippines and served the chairperson of Young Statisticians Committee of the International Statistical Institute during 2020 – 2023. She is also a member of American Statistical Association and International Biometric Society.

Daniel Osorio Barreto is a Ph.D. student and member of the KAUST Biostatistics Group under the supervision of Professor Hernando Ombao. Before joining KAUST, Daniel obtained a bachelor's degree in Economics from Universidad Autónoma de Manizales and an M.Sc. in Economics from Universidad de Manizales, Colombia. Research Interests Daniel's research interests include biostatistics, behavioral economics, and macroeconomics.
