Research Interests

​Environments exposed to crude oil are extreme environments for living organisms. Although being a rich hydrocarbon source, crude oil is highly hydrophobic being inaccessible for microorganisms and several byproducts of its degradation are highly toxic for most living forms. Different prokaryote species have been found specifically associated with diverse crude oil environments. The metabolic interactions among these co-occurring species have not been fully deciphered yet. Understanding how microbial consortia metabolize crude oil will constitute the basis for designing biotechnological solutions for environmental applications such as microbial enhanced oil recovery.
