Siham Fatani, a Ph.D. candidate under the supervision of Distinguished Professor Takashi Gojobori, defended her thesis proposal on December 12, 2018.
In her presentation, "Bioprospecting The Red Sea: Isolation and Characterization of Cellulase-Producing Microorganisms", Siham examined if the Red Sea is a potential resource for bio-prospecting of new cellulases by conducting a comprehensive survey of Red Sea metagenome and then isolating and characterizing cellulase genes and its producing microorganisms in the Red Sea.
Her thesis proposal was well received by committee members DistinguishedProfessor Takashi Gojobori, Professor Vladimir Bajic and Professor Stefan Arold.
