Signal Processing and Optimization Techniques for High Accuracy Indoor Localization, Tracking, and Attitude Determination

High-accuracy indoor localization and tracking systems are essential for many modern applications and technologies. However, accurate location estimation of moving targets is challenging. This thesis addresses the challenges in indoor localization and tracking systems and proposes several solutions. A novel signal design, which we named Differential Zadoff-Chu, allows us to develop algorithms that accurately estimate the distances of static and moving targets even under random Doppler shifts. The results show that the proposed algorithms outperform the state-of-the-art in terms of both accuracy and complexity.

Professor of Electrical Engineering, Ahmed Eltawil, recently joined the KAUST CEMSE Division from the University of California (UCI), Irvine, where he had worked for 14 years prior. At UCI, Eltawil worked in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and was also the founder and director of the university’s Wireless Systems and Circuits Laboratory. As an expert in system integration for wireless systems, he joins KAUST with an established pedigree of university-industry collaboration, and he continues to act as an advisor in the development of wireless systems for leading international companies.

Yingquan Li, 21, is an electrical engineering graduate who will join KAUST in the fall of 2020. He will join KAUST as a M.S./Ph.D. candidate in the KAUST Communication Theory Lab under the supervision of Professor Mohamed-Slim Alouini. An initial reference from a supervisor spurred his interest in joining KAUST, which resulted in a visiting student opportunity at KAUST. During his internship, Li was amazed by the facilities and research standard found on campus. It was this combination of impressive factors that inspired him to continue his academic career at the University.
