Modeling and Automated Storytelling of Mesoscale Molecular Models

In my talk, I will present techniques that allow biologists to model a mesocale entity in a rapid way in the timeframe of a few minutes to hours. This way we have created the first complete atomistic model of the SARS-CoV-2 virion that we are these days sharing with the worldwide scientific community. Mesoscale represents a scalar gap that is currently not possible to accurately image with neither microscopy nor X-ray crystallography approaches. For this purpose, scientists characterize it by observations from the surrounding nanoscale and the microscale. From this information, it is possible to reconstruct a three-dimensional model of a biological entity with a full atomistic model. The problem is that these models are enormously large and are not possible to model with traditional methods from computer graphics within a reasonable time.

DNA replication is a fundamental cellular process and its precise regulation is crucial for maintaining genomic integrity. Inspired by the mathematical parallelism between DNA replication and the nucleation problem in one-dimensional crystal growth kinetics, we introduce a model that maps whole-genome replication dynamics based on the firing rate profiles of replication origins and fork movement.

Advances in Microelectromechanical Digital Circuit Design: Low Power Computation, Sensing and Beyond

Electromechanical switches were the core elements of the very first digital computers in early 20th century. While these switches were later replaced by the smaller, faster and more reliable "transistor" technology, they found a new life following the development of nanofabrication tools and Micro-electromechannical Systems (MEMS). In this seminar we will explore the most recent advances in the field of MEMS-based digital circuit and sensor design. We also examine the application of MEMS switches and resonators in building the most important blocks of a digital system, namely adders, multipliers, data converters, sequential and combinational complex logic, and discuss the future of this technology in the beyond-CMOS era.

End-to-Same-End Encryption: Modularly Augmenting an App with an Efficient, Portable, and Blind Cloud Storage

Cloud storage is pervasive nowadays; surprisingly, how to secure cloud storage that is usable in the real world is in fact still open. In this work, we propose a novel system called End-to-Same-End Encryption (E2SEE) that can be deployed directly on existing infrastructure and provide both security and usability. Our system can be flexibly used to augment any App with secure storage, for users to create a personal digital lockbox, and for the cloud to provide secure storage service. A preliminary version of E2SEE was deployed in Snapchat, serving hundreds of millions of users, and the research result was published at USENIX Security 22.

In this talk we discuss approaches to low power design for advanced communication and computing platforms. Specifically, we present the concept of cognitive power management, where contrary to common approaches that assume a 100% error free hardware, the algorithm is made aware of the statistical error performance of the underlying hardware platform. By accounting for hardware errors at the system level, the explorable power management design space is significantly expanded, leading to novel power saving schemes that deliver expected application performance at much lower power consumption. Sample case studies including LTE system design and in-memory computing platforms will be presented and discussed.

Discrete conformal mappings and Riemann Surfaces: Theory and Applications

The general idea of discrete differential geometry is to find and investigate discrete models that exhibit properties and structures characterisitic of the corresponding smooth geometric objects. This is a challenging problem, since equivalent points of view in the smooth setting may lead to a number of inequivalent treatments in the discrete setting. We will illustrate the paradigm of structure-preserving discretizations on the example of conformal maps by showing how simple definitions lead to surprisingly rich theories.

Nonlinear and dispersive waves: Theory, computations and applications

The study of waves in fluids is one of the most significant branches of fluid mechanics. Part of this study is the theory of nonlinear and dispersive waves which has recently emerged and is still under development. Nonlinear and dispersive waves appear in fluids of any form and have significant role in the fields of oceanic waves (surface and internal), atmospheric modelling, electromagnetism, nonlinear optics, ultra-cold matter and even in blood flow problems. In this presentation we will review relevant applications, such as tsunami waves, the El Nino southern oscillation, blood flow in arteries and solitons propagating in optical fibres. Mathematical modelling techniques for deriving equations that describe such phenomena will be introduced in the context of surface water waves. We will also review the minimum required theoretical background in order to proceed with safe numerical simulations. Finally, we will discuss the numerical modelling of such problems where methods such as standard and mixed Galerkin / Finite element methods are of central focus. We close this presentation by showcasing a topic of much current interest, namely, the development of modern mathematical models for nonlinear and dispersive waves by combining machine learning techniques with classical methodologies.

Integration Strategy for Standalone Compliant Interactive Systems for Add-on Electronics

Physically compliant electronics are scientifically intriguing, mechanically complex, ‎technologically ‎challenging but with huge socio-economical potential. Until now the target applications ‎for ‎flexible electronics have been limited to displays, solar cells, printed batteries, wearables, and ‎implantable. However, with the emergence and growth of Internet of Things (IoT) devices ‎worldwide ‎from nearly 27 billion in 2017 to 125 billion in 2030, in this PhD research, expanding the ‎horizon of ‎applications for flexible electronics toward existing “things” will be explored. Low-cost sustainable materials as active electronic materials and a ‎Do-It-Yourself (DIY) integration strategy is used to build “Add-on” standalone sensory system which can be ‎attached to any ‎existing things like a decal. Such electronics can also be embedded in newly minted ‎devices specially ‎using additive methods.

Multiphysics Simulation of Semiconductor-based Terahertz Devices

Ultra-Dense LEO Satellite-based Communication Systems: A Novel Modelling Technique

In this talk, we discuss a recently proposed mathematical framework that enables tractable analysis of LEO satellite-enabled communication systems while capturing the influence of satellites’ numbers and altitudes as well as the spatial distribution of earth stations. Firstly, we describe how the stochastic geometry-based framework is modeled and discuss its accuracy. Next, we provide a detailed example of where this framework can be used for coverage analysis. Furthermore, we discuss how this framework can be used to study routing and end-to-end latency analysis in such networks. Realistic values from existing constellations, such as OneWeb and Starlink, are further used as case studies in this talk.

Weak solutions of the 2D Euler equations

In this talk we consider the Cauchy problem for the 2D Euler equations for incompressible inviscid fluids. It is well-known that given a smooth initial datum, the Cauchy problem is well-posed and in particular the energy is conserved and the vorticity is transported by the flow of the velocity. When we consider weak solutions this might not be the case anymore. We will review some recent results obtained in collaboration with Gianluca Crippa and Gennaro Ciampa where we extend those properties to the case of irregular vorticities. In particular, under low integrability assumptions on the vorticity we show that certain approximations important from a physical and a numerical point of view converge to solutions satisfying those properties.

A Variational Theory of Aero-hydrodynamics

The Euler equation does not possess a unique solution for the flow over a two-dimensional object. This problem has serious repercussions in aerodynamics; it implies that the inviscid aero-hydrodynamic lift force over a two-dimensional object cannot be determined from first principles; a closure condition must be provided. The Kutta condition has been ubiquitously considered for such closure in the literature, even in cases where it is not applicable (e.g. unsteady).
